Taking care of your skin is so important, and yet people still neglect to pay proper attention to the biggest organ of their body. Your face is what you present to the world and some people are fine with the bare minimum that really isn’t giving it the love it needs.
I often find that it’s men who neglect their skin the most, citing it as something too girly and unnecessary for them and their testosterone. This is wrong! Guys, you should take care of your skin, regardless of how ‘feminine’ you think it is.
Anyway, it’s important to make sure you’re doing the right things for your skin. Skincare isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. Literally everyone should have different products and routines because everyone’s skin is different. Here is what you need to do to find out what you should be using.
Asses Your Skin Type
There are three main types of skin: dry, oily and combination. They speak for themselves so you shouldn’t really need them explaining.
If you find your skin feels tight after a hot wash or if you get patches of scaly skin on your face, your skin will be a dry type.
If you find you have excess moisture on your skin, even after completely cleaning your face, or if your face sometimes feels heavy or uncomfortably dewy to touch, chances are you have oily skin. Oily skin is also more prone to breakouts and spots due to the excess oil that builds up in the pores.
Combination skin is a mixture of both. This can manifest in a couple of ways. Either different areas of your face will be dry/oily at the same time, or your entire face will sometimes be dry or sometimes be oily, dependant on internal and external factors such as menstrual cycle, season or if you exercise a lot.
Find The Right Products for Your Skin Type
It goes without saying that you should buy skincare products that match your skin type. PRetty much all brands and products are designed for one particular skin type so once you’ve assessed your skin, lookout for products that are designed for that skin type.
Dry skin needs products with an oil base as it will help counteract the lack of natural moisture in your skin. Oily skin works best with products that have salicylic acid as an ingredient, this can help to neutralise the excess levels of your skin.
Pixi’s Glow Tonic is one of the rare products that works for all skin types, I’ve used it plenty with my combination skin during all it’s cycles and it works great. It seems to assess your skin for you and activates whatever it needs to to make sure your face is left clean, cleansed and looking radiant.
What Products You Need to Buy
For every skincare routine, you need these core products. Asses your skin type and then find the right types of these products to make sure you are giving your face the love and attentions it needs.
The first thing you need is a face wash. The foaming face washes are my favourite as it feels really gently on my skin while still having a deep cleaning effect. Get a decent liquid cleanser too, micellar water is good, but if you have breakout-prone skin, I can’t sing the praises of Clean&Clear enough. IT contains salicylic acid and, while it may feel like it burns the first few times you use it, it does a great job.
You should also invest in a toner. This can help to balance out your skin and even out any uneven colourings while giving you a dewy glow.
The final staple of any skincare routine is moisturiser. This is a tricky product to get right for your skin so you may have to experiment. Small moisturiser samples are great for getting a taste of what will work for your skin and you may need to mix this up every 6 months as your skin gets used to the formula and begins to reject it.
